Age: 3215 Race/Species: Hellhound Hometown: Hades, though he tells people Northern Peloponnese, Greece Physical description: Hound form: In general, a hellhound is a black dog with fiery non-luminous red eyes. They may be any size from Labrador retriever up to grizzly bear. Size is generally proportional to strength and power, but not to intelligence. Fur is almost invariably short; ears are pointed, never floppy; tails are straight and seldom plumed. After these basics, there are many possible mutations. A hellhound may be born with a third eye, or a snake's tail, or even three heads (the famous Cerberus being the only example of that particular mutation). These mutations are nothing like mutation in DNA; each one was programmed in specifically, and when a puppy is conceived there is a small probability it will show just one of the possible mutations. At first glance, Malacoda looks like a typical Rottweiler-Doberman mix, except for being 4’ high at the head and being bigger and bulkier than either breed. A hellhound’s eyes can be either fiery red or searing yellow and Malacoda’s are a brilliant red. Where his ears should be are two thick horns, curling back towards the jowls at the ends. His chest is broad and muscled; bone armor protrudes from the shoulder blades and curls to the front of his chest, meeting to form the shape of a skull. Bone bracers encircle each of his legs, just up from his massive paws. Malacoda’s tail is long and serpentine, ending in a tri-corner tip, much like the Christian version of Satan’s. Human form: Standing in at 5’9 ½ and 180 pounds, Malakai is all lean muscle thanks to his demonic lineage. His eyes are a soft blue-grey that are rather striking when in his human form. Shaggy dark brown hair trails over his collar and hangs in his eyes, giving him a wild and untamed look. He generally wears whatever is popular during that season of fashion, doing his best to blend in. Casual wear consists of nice jeans, a t-shirt and sneakers while his more professional wear will vary from tossing a suit jacket over that same outfit, to a full three piece suit. Distinguishing Marks: On the back of his neck, a symbol of Hades can be seen once exposed to extreme heat, like fire. Otherwise, the marking is invisible. PB: Ian Somerhalder Personality: As a hound, Malacoda is feral and ferocious. When given a command from his superior, he follows without question. He was bred for intensity and intelligence, and is a testament to his breeding. He’s a fast learner and once he knows what is expected, he will duplicate it time and again. Like all dogs, he has a playful side, but it has been tamped down due to both the demonic material in his DNA and training. When on a hunt, Malacoda will stop at nothing short of death to capture his prey. He is fiercely loyal to Hades and, by proxy, demons. As a human, Malakai has the same instincts as his hound form, and the same cunning, but he doesn’t let that slip when in the company of other humans. He maintains a quiet demeanor, watching the interactions of those around him and filing the information away to utilize later. His years as a human have given him a very unique perspective for a hound, and he is still curious about all the intricacies that spawn from relationships and connections between the species. Interacting with people has been a learned skill for him and it’s something he’s managed to smooth out over the years. On occasion, he’ll say or do something that would seem out of the ordinary to a mortal, but nothing so grand as to cause comment. To those that earn his loyalty, they have it completely and he will do whatever it takes to protect them. History of hellhounds: Hellhounds were created by a group of ancient demons, none of which is thought to have survived to modern day. This means, taking into account demons' generally uncommunicative nature, that there are few, if any, demons left who will admit to remembering where hellhounds come from. Hellhounds were created from normal dogs that were imported into hell. After a selective breeding project was abandoned -- demons being very impatient -- a group of demonic geneticists combined lycan DNA with demon genetic material. Carbon-based life forms' genetic material is nothing whatsoever like demon DNA. Manipulating other life forms' genes is an extremely advanced skill. Combining one with the other is ludicrously difficult. The designer’s purpose was to create a being who would serve the needs of the demons, demons who wanted wonderful and, above all, obedient pet/companion/bodyguards. Against flabbergasting huge odds, viable life forms were eventually created through this process. Originally, they were mentally unstable and had various other problems, many of which were ironed out over time. Hounds that were disobedient or extremely willful were killed off while young, the same as those who did not do the tasks they were assigned. Those who managed to live a few centuries gained the trust of the demons, and were given harder, more complicated tasks. They were also given a special potion to prolong their lifespan, which must be taken every fifty years. Hellhounds reproduce quite like normal dogs. This was a deliberate feature and originally intended for keeping track of new births. Hellhounds are not romantics. Hellbitches come into season about once a year, for a few days, and this generally makes them even more irritable than usual. The female will select her mate more or less at random, usually with a growled "Hey you". Mating takes place with much snarling and biting, after which the female forgets about the male pretty much immediately. Approximately one mating in three results in pregnancy; hellhounds are not very fertile, due to all the genetic tampering. The gestation period is around five months. Normally only one puppy is born; on rare occasions there may be twins. A hellbitch can't physically carry more than two pups to term. If more than two happen to be conceived, the female’s body automatically aborts the pups. Usually a female will not breed again for one or two menstrual cycles. Hellhounds are not naturally maternal. The pup's eyes are open by the time it is born, and it can stand within minutes. Pups are generally weaned and ready to leave their mother by the age of two months. Although they are weaned early, hellpups have a relatively long childhood. They take about 12 years (by human standards) to reach adolescence, although their brains develop more slowly, and it'll be four more years before they are physically mature. It takes a while for body to catch up with mind. This too could be seen as genetic-engineering negligence. Background: Malacoda is the great-great grand son of the famous guardian of Hades, Cerberus. Once he was old enough to take on assigned tasks and out of the puppy phase, Malacoda was given the duty of standing guard over the gate to Hades alongside his ancestor. He worked hard, letting only the dead pass through on the River Styx, and fighting ferociously with the few living who attempted to pass. While Malacoda was on duty, no living being aside from the gods made it into Hades. After a thousand years at the gate, he had earned his place in the demonic realm, and the trust of the god, Hades. Malacoda was also one of the privileged few to be given the special life-lengthening potion that would keep him as a servant of the demons. He was given the charge of continuing his guard duty, but earth side. It wasn’t so much that he needed to guard the gate itself, so much as the knowledge of its location. Standing outside it, as he had hell-side would be foolish as it would only advertise its location. Instead, he was charged with wandering the earth and protecting its secret, confusing the humans and feeding false information when asked about it. The task of collecting the lost souls on earth also fell to him. Over the years, more and more ghosts believed that they had unfinished business in their lives and thus did not move on to the Underworld. Those that were not of the Greco-Roman belief, and did not worship the proper gods were to be left wandering the earth. To blend in on the mortal plane, Hades worked with a couple other gods to give Malacoda a human form and knowledge of human languages. He was told about the happenings above ground and determined that life as a human was crazy. Given to him, was the recipe for the life potion he would need to keep taking, as well as a contact in the human “Greece” that would be able to make a substantial quantity for him to keep. Moving to the other realm, he realized that having to walk on two legs was incredibly cumbersome and clumsy. It took him several years to fully get used to the human body and all its quirks, but once he did, he blended in quite well. Thankfully, he learned quickly and came to terms with his new body. He spent the next two millennia following the souls and taking up human jobs to keep his cover. He changed his name every couple decades, as well as moved around, knowing that since he didn’t age, it could quickly become suspicious. Malacoda worked as a guard, sentry, soldier, and other various positions throughout the years, and gradually moved to America once it was “discovered.” Once there, he continued changing jobs and places, becoming a private investigator, detective, police officer, FBI agent and others over his years. Malakai Hardy became his most current name, according to the identification he’d forged. Hacking American government systems were really quite simple. Following his nose led him to a small town in Massachusetts where ghosts were abundant. It seemed that for every soul he returned to Hades, three more roamed free. Abilities: Hellhounds are, to all intents, heatproof and fireproof: they will not burn, their tissues won't be damaged by fire, and their body chemistry isn't affected however much their core temperature rises, and so on. This includes combustion caused by magic. They can survive being frozen solid, though will lose consciousness. Since they are of the fire element, hellhounds can manipulate fire, and work basic spells using it. Hellhounds speak and understand demonic language and also normal dog communication. After spending so many years on earth, Malakai can speak several human languages, including English. His senses, agility and stamina are on par with normal hunting and coursing dogs, taking the hellhound's size into account. Size is generally proportional to strength and power, but not to intelligence. Hellhounds are extraordinarily intelligent. When in hound form, they see in color, though a skewed range, because their corneas are red. A hellhound's hunting howl is supernaturally terrifying. It is described as causing terror in "mortals", which can be taken to mean roughly anything other than most kinds of demons, most angels and full blown deities - it particularly includes ghosts and anything dead or undead, those being hellhounds' intended prey. Hellhound howling tends to set up odd echoes that heighten the effect and make the sound seem louder. In enclosed spaces the effect can be awesome enough to make rational thought flee, while in wide open spaces the sound carries over great distances. Weaknesses: Hellhounds are somewhat vulnerable to fire’s opposing elements. For instance, they can survive being frozen solid, but will be unconscious during it and in pain when awoken. When in hound form, he can be incredibly playful and has developed a secret love for Frisbees when thrown by a demon. He listens and immediately obeys the Hound Master and Hades himself; thus meaning that he may have to leave at the drop of a hat to fulfill his duty. When in hound form, he thinks about the hunt to the exclusion of all other thoughts. Due to his demonic nature, he’s incredibly sensitive to holy objects and areas. If he were to ingest holy water, in either form, the effects would be devastating and painful, ultimately leading to his death. Also, when stabbed by a holy object, the effects are similar. If it was not a normally fatal wound, Malakai would be out of commission for several days to weeks, depending on the severity. However, an attack through the heart, brain, spine or other vital organs with a holy blade would cause death. Since he has to take a special potion every fifty years, missing one would cause him to start aging drastically. Effects can be reversed as soon as he takes it again, but without it, he would die, especially given his current age. Roommate: Preferably none. Staff Position: Professor of Demonic Lore, and Sponsor for the Demon Club Training/Experience: By virtue of his age and the time spent on earth, he is well versed in the various demons roaming the land and has learned a great deal about the lore of different demonic races, including his own. He has practice controlling his demonic form, and utilizing his skills in the human form, both of which could prove useful to teaching other demons. While he’s never held the position of “professor”, he has taught various demons throughout time how to control their powers and to blend into society.
